- Im in contact with Samsung and am told they are addressing the Rack Zoom Focus issue!
- Many have asked why I didn't do a 10FPS buffer test with the NX1 vs 10FPS with the 7Dii. Had I done that, I would have been asked why I didn't do a 15 FPS buffer test with NX1. I always test cameras at their highest performance. Many have speculated that because it wasn't 10fps, it was not fair, but if you watch the original test all the information is there. The JPEG test on the NX-1 was Fine, 7Dii was Super Fine , 12 bit vs 14 bit, etc.
To put this issue to bed, I have done a 10fps test, and here are the numbers, RAW+JPEG 24, Super Fine JPEG 95, Fine JPEG 202. 7Dii still wins here with JPEGs (it can do up to 1000). 7Dii's buffer performance is still better at 10 fps when it comes to JPEG only.

Ill have a lot of side notes coming here shortly. We have even more tests we did, but had to cut it down for time:
- For usability, the NX-1 touch monitor was better than the 7Dii's monitor, but the menus were lacking some things (like audio gain controls) which I do not mention as a new firmware will address them. Im leaning towards wanting touch monitors on everything now.
- I like what Samsung is doing feature wise, there are some indications the NX-1 is capable of up to 240 fps at 1080 (in their testing but not released). The autofocus refreshes at 240fps for video tracking, but does not record at that rate. Once the h265 issue is resolved, some of the color balance and exposure shifting, the NX1 is going to be a home run winner.
- On the Rack Focus issue. Once a mirrorless camera company resolves this, the writing is on the wall for the end of DSLRs. It is the last major advantage DSLRs still have and will not be easy to overcome, but it will eventually happen.
- Video tracking on both cameras was good, but also inconsistent and was difficult to get them to fail repeatedly under the same circumstances so it was inconclusive and left them out of the review.

Great job! I know these comparisons take a really long time to create, so
thanks for putting in the time. I'm waiting on Adobe to support h265 before
I review the nx1, I hope that will come at NAB in April.

Thanks for sharing Michael Andrew. For the focus tests you where shooting
the NX1 @15 and 7D2 @10, so if both have a similar % of usable shots that
would mean you have about 50% more actual photos that are usable on the NX1
correct? If that's true then on the side to side test even though the NX1
is at 70& accuracy the actual amount of photos that are usable is similar
if not more than the usable ones on the 7D2.
I also wonder how well the NX1 will do compared to the 7D2 if the GH4 was
also at 10FPS mode. Is there a chance that you could do a small test video
just testing the NX1's 10fps vs the 7D's 10. I think there will be a lot of
people wanting to see that.

Glad to see someone using a proper methodology with these AF tests! :)
One concern, though--your shots seem to have a very deep depth-of-field, so
it might be impossible to know whether the camera actually gets the subject
in focus. That's OK, because it's pretty realistic for casual sports, and
it's the reason many mirrorless users feel like their cameras are focusing
well. They might be missing focus, but you just won't notice it.
Also note that side-to-side focusing requires the camera to do little or
nothing, because the focal plane changes very little. It's also much easier
to focus on a faraway subject than it is to focus on a closer subject.
For the sake of determining two cameras, you might construct an additional
test with very shallow depth-of-field, by filling more of the frame with
your subject, or using longer lenses.
Anyway, I'm a fan, and I happen to spend A WHOLE LOT of time thinking about
the best way to test AF systems, and wanted to share my thoughts.
My Canon 7Dii vs Samsung NX-1 Epic Shootout is here! Just about everything
you would want to know about these 2 cameras!

awesome review. I was hoping to get an NX1 for a hybrid camera that was
great with photo and video but all the tests ive seen have a crappy shallow
depth of field and a lot of noise. Out of your 12 portrait tests i picked
the 7d 9 times, the nx1 2 times and said i didnt like either image on one.
I def will not get the NX1 for photography now so ill either wait for a
canon with 4k or get the 6d to accompany my GH4

I dont think the test is quite fair, because the NX1 can take UHS-II cards,
which are way faster. Also I would like to know how the NX1 does with 10fps
against the 7DmkII with 10fps. The conclusion, that the 7DmkII has a better
buffer performance is just not taking into consideration, that the NX1
files are bigger with more resolution and that it also takes 5 frames more
per second.

Good job buddy. BTW, Intel just released HEVC (H.265) hardware decode
drivers for Intel's 4th generation (Haswell) or 5th generation (Broadwell)
integrated graphics card.

Great reviews! Like your style and the way you go through all the testing,
real world testing. Keep up the good work! I have a Canon 7d mk1 and an
Olympus Em5. Both works fine to me in real world usage. ISO performance not
good above 800 for the 7d so just shoots in daylight and stobes. Likewise
Em5 also not good above 3200 but with fast glass get to work more in low
like situations. To me one just need to know the ability and performance of
each individual cameras he owns and use it according to the situation at
hand and will yield good results if you know what you are doing. Cheers!

I always like your left and right comparisons in your videos. Usually I
score about 50% on each camera. I score taking into account my processing
needs with image detail being most important to me. I scored 66% in favor
of the Canon images that appeared to have better perceptual megapixels.
There are two possibilities for this:
1) The Canon has significantly better image quality (for my prefered look)
2) The lens on the Canon is superior to the lens used on the NX1
Because of sensor reviews from dxomark we are led to believe Canon sensors
are not as good as many of the sensors on the market. When I review the
performance of lenses used on Canon bodies lens performance is always very
good (especially Canon lenses).
It seems to me Canon lenses are optimized better than the competition. In
the end I usually like the image quality from any camera just as much.
I'm shocked at how much more I liked the Canon images above the NX1 images
in this test.
I would like to know how other viewers feel about this? What was your
favorite, and why?

Another great video, thanks!
I have already shared this with a ton of people, not only because of the
showdown, but because of the fantastic information you provide on how the
focusing systems work and differ on the DSLR vs Mirrorless and how that
mirror helps aid in the action shooting.
Your explanations on all things technical in all your videos are fantastic.
Look forward to your next video.
I remember your D7100 vs 70D shootout helped me decide which camera to
buy. It was your blind side by side shots that made me realize that I
didn't have to worry about how the photos would turn out (as I ended up
preferring I think exactly 50% from both cameras), and I could focus more
on the features that were important to me... (I got the D7100 by the way,
and love it)

I'm thinking this servo test is setup wrong? If you are shooting high speed
bursts, you are doing so to get more useable pictures? Right?
Wouldn't the Samsung be the clear winner then?
Side-to-side action servo test:
Canon = 93% of 10fps = 9 pictures
NX1 = 70% of 15fps = 10 pictures
Forward action servo test:
Canon = 73% of 10fps = 7 pictures
NX1 = 86% of 15fps = 12 pictures
Away action into backlight:
Canon = 55% of 10fps = 5 pictures
NX1 = 70% of 15fps = 9 pictures
And focusing at 15fps doesn't give the camera as much time as the Canon had
to focus in between shots. The real test would be shooting both at 10fps.
And see how the buffer would handle then, if the NX1 had more time to write.
Since the size of the JPEGS and RAW files is much bigger on the NX1, also a
disadvantage, so you'ld be better off using an UHS-1 or 2 SD card?

One con about the NX1 is heat with video, and the 30 minute limit. I like
the characteristics of Samsung video at 4k, and the color palette. It is
such a pleasant looking picture. But the 30 minute limit makes me exclude
it. I can't have that limit. And I can see from your test that the 30
minute limit is likely from the heat issue. So you say the NX1 is a new
venture with Samsung. If they are listening to you, maybe you could add to
your 'cons' list the heat issue, with that dreaded 30 minute limit. It
would be nice if they'd make it a priority in the next generation of this
new camera to fix that. That 30 minute limit has excluded so many cameras
from those of us that need to shoot for a couple hours at a time sometimes.
I REALLY would like to use the 4k video of this Samsung camera. Here's to
hoping they have unlimited shoot time in the next generation. It is
interesting that the GoPro HERO4, as you mentioned, has internal, unlimited
record time, at 4K. Why not in the next NX1! :-)
Thank you for this review. I now know so much more about both these
cameras.

Canon did a really nice job with the Mark ll. I've been shooting sports
with it since November and am very pleased with the ISO performance,
auto-focus system, and 10 FPS -shooting basketball, & volleyball in high
school & college gyms, as well as Soccer and Football at night. Great
camera. The real Deal breakers are the 6% accuracy during rack focusing on
the NX-1 or the viewfinder shutoff after a second of shooting High Speed
Continuous.

Hi Michael,
Great video! Love your methodology and all of the precision. Keep it up!

The problem with the mobile app is on apples side. They don't allow
developers to use NFC , which is what most samsung cameras use to connect
the camera with the phone. However it seems that from now on you will also
be able to use bluetooth so the app may be coming soon.

Hey michael really loving everything ive seen from the nx1 so far. How
does the af compare with the d600
Peichen01 (18 days ago)
I picked 7D2 11 times out of 12. I am kinda amazed I like Canon color so
much more than Samsung's. I have only shoot Nikon, Olympus and Fujifilm
DSLR/EVIL/mirrorless before so I am pretty sure I have no preconception on
which color I'd like more.
South Style Movies (22 days ago)
Very good job, but i have few points to make here. First it's about the DR
of Canon even the high end canon body(like 5d mark 3) is rated not more
than 12 EV witch is = bit depth so more than 12 bit raw for this body is
overkill. And above iso 100-200 prabaly the two cameras have DR less than
12 EV, so 12 bit raw shout be enough especially for canon users.Second
thing is about the information that every camera must processed for a brust
of pictures . The NX1 have 8 MP more than the canon and 50% more FPS, so
there is no real way to beat it in picture count. I think it would be
better to set NX1 to shoot at 10 or 8 FPS (i don't remember the exact
options that NX1 have) so to see how it could last on little slower phase.
