Deflate Gate & Why Science Says the Patriots Did Not Tamper With Footballs

Deflate Gate & Why Science Says the Patriots Did Not Tamper With Footballs
Curiosity got the better part of me and I had to investigate Deflate Gate on my own. I was surprised with the results and this is what I learned. Strong evidence, in an easy experiment that you can do at home that suggests temperature change did result in loss of pressure of footballs for the Patriots. (For those of you who don't know, the Ideal Gas Law, PV=nRT is the law I refer to in the video, that I didnt specifically state).

Something I failed to mention in the video, I couldn't tell the difference between 12.5 PSI and 10.5 PSI with my hands, that's how subtle the difference is. I'm not even sure how the referees could have discovered it unless it was something they were actively looking for. Additionally, many say the "smoking gun" is that the Colts footballs did not change pressure. That isnt very clear, reports I have read said "they were still within regulation pressure" which means 12.5 PSI or higher. Had the Colts footballs not lost any pressure, that would have actually been a stronger indication of tampering on the Colts part, unless there is another simpler explanation I give in the video.

Here are some other videos on YouTube that also support that temperature change can reasonably explain a loss in air pressure of the footballs:

DXO MARK - Top 10 Things You Didn't Know about DXO's Sensor Scores
Probably the most commonly asked question I get on my channel is why my ISO scores differ than DXO Mark's sensor test scores. Having answered this question repeatedly, it became clear to me that those who ask may not fully understand everything they need to about DXO's scores, what they are and how they are graded. This information is all on DXO Mark’s website, but it tends to be a little buried, in very small text and hard to find. This video is a summary of the most important things to know about their scores.

What did I miss?

On a personal note, the only score I really look at on DXO mark is their Dynamic Range test, which seems to be very consistent with my own testing. I do not look at their overall score because it doesnt make sense to me, the color score doesn’t seem to matter much over 22 bits by their own definition and the ISO score to me is not useful because cameras with better DR and color will get a better ISO score. That is all just my personal opinion.

Canon 7Dii Mark 2 vs Samsung NX1 Epic Shootout Review | Which Camera to Buy | Training Tutorial

37:21
UPDATES:

- Im in contact with Samsung and am told they are addressing the Rack Zoom Focus issue!

- Many have asked why I didn't do a 10FPS buffer test with the NX1 vs 10FPS with the 7Dii. Had I done that, I would have been asked why I didn't do a 15 FPS buffer test with NX1. I always test cameras at their highest performance. Many have speculated that because it wasn't 10fps, it was not fair, but if you watch the original test all the information is there. The JPEG test on the NX-1 was Fine, 7Dii was Super Fine , 12 bit vs 14 bit, etc.

To put this issue to bed, I have done a 10fps test, and here are the numbers, RAW+JPEG 24, Super Fine JPEG 95, Fine JPEG 202. 7Dii still wins here with JPEGs (it can do up to 1000). 7Dii's buffer performance is still better at 10 fps when it comes to JPEG only.

Ill have a lot of side notes coming here shortly. We have even more tests we did, but had to cut it down for time:

- For usability, the NX-1 touch monitor was better than the 7Dii's monitor, but the menus were lacking some things (like audio gain controls) which I do not mention as a new firmware will address them. Im leaning towards wanting touch monitors on everything now.

- I like what Samsung is doing feature wise, there are some indications the NX-1 is capable of up to 240 fps at 1080 (in their testing but not released). The autofocus refreshes at 240fps for video tracking, but does not record at that rate. Once the h265 issue is resolved, some of the color balance and exposure shifting, the NX1 is going to be a home run winner.

- On the Rack Focus issue. Once a mirrorless camera company resolves this, the writing is on the wall for the end of DSLRs. It is the last major advantage DSLRs still have and will not be easy to overcome, but it will eventually happen.

- Video tracking on both cameras was good, but also inconsistent and was difficult to get them to fail repeatedly under the same circumstances so it was inconclusive and left them out of the review.

The optical focusing systems are among the very best I have ever seen for 3 reasons:

1. Total Coverage
2. All 65 squares are cross type
3. 10 FPS

Put those three together and you have a machine gun of a sports shooting camera, and I have been very impressed so far.

This Focusing Tutorial is made for beginning and intermediate photographers to learn the 7Dii's focusing system as quickly as possible, and is just one lesson from my new training guide on the 7D2. Enjoy!

My Canon 7Dii Tutorial should be available for purchase on Dec 1, 2014.

Nikon D750 vs Canon 5Diii Epic Shootout Review | Which camera to buy? | Tutorial Training
Be sure to look me up on Instragram! http://instagram.com/michaelthemaven

The opening music is called “Sinister Intent” by Danny Locke and it was licensed through songfreedom.com - he does some spectacular work and I hope to license more of his music in the future. The stead-cam shots were all done with the Canon 5Diii on a glide-cam 4000.

First off, you should know the Canon 5Diii is my workhorse camera. I used it nearly every single day I shoot. There is something about the look of the image itself I still ove, and it is very easy to use. I don’t think that will change too much in the immediate future.

When I originally started testing the Nikon D750 I was just super impressed with the still images coming out of it, there was a look and a sharpness that was noticeable and I found myself wanting to use it more and more. Eventually I came to the conclusion that the D750 was very different than the D600/610 based on image quality alone and it actually lined up very well against Canon’s 5Diii. Despite using both cameras regularly since their release, I knew that it would be impossible to say for sure which one was better and how, unless I did an Epic Shootout on them. I believe you will find many of the results surprising. This video represents a good 3-4 weeks of testing and production, so just know I do not take my Epic Shootouts lightly. Many of the tests were performed several times.

In the end, your skills as a photographer are going to be much more important than the camera you are using, if you are struggling to learn you camera, I have you covered:

My Full Length Nikon D750 Tutorial Training Video can be ordered here: http://www.canontrainingvideo.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=77

Just wrapped up my Nikon D750 Crash Course Training Video. I know many of you just got the camera, and the focusing systems are one of the trickiest to learn if you are a pure beginner, so I wanted to make this lesson available to you. It is just one of many lessons from my video, over 4 hours total, and it comes with a 100% money back guarantee.

All this said, what are my personal thoughts about the Nikon D750? It is an absolutely phenomenal camera, my favorite of all the Nikon full Frames I have ever used. Improved focusing, improved ISO, improved low-light, improved moire, tilty screen, wifi, built in flash. It is a tremendous value and performance wise the D750 compares very, very well to competing Canon cameras, including the Canon 5Diii and Canon 6D.

Hmmm...maybe an Epic Shootout on the D750 is coming?? Stay tuned!

If you are in the market for the Nikon D750, I would highly recommend Bhphoto.com, and buying through this link supports my channel: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1082599-REG/nikon_d750_dslr_camera_body.html/BI/2765/KBID/3688

GH4 10-Bit vs 8-Bit Comparison at 4K | Is 10 Bit Color worth the cost?
Be sure to check out my GH4 Tutorial Training Video here: http://www.canontrainingvideo.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=74

As many of you have requested, this is a side by side comparisons of the GH4 at 8-bit vs 10-bit at 4K, can you tell which is which?

At what point would you said 10-bit is too noisy?

Most importantly, is the cost of the recorder and everything involved in making it happen (YAGH for example was the only way I could get it to work) worth it?

I would love to hear your thoughts! Please leave them in the comments below!

Check out the full Epic Shootout of the GH4 vs the A7s here: http://youtu.be/qdMypfYrKgw

PS- I personally would say at ISO 200 or 400, 10-Bit looks better, 800 or more, its just too noisy.

Thank you guys for all your shares of this video as well as the comments and feedback. I can’t tell you how often I get great input which helps me learn about what I can do better. I am sincerely trying to do my best to provide to you the most accurate information you can get about both of the top end mirrorless cameras in the Panasonic GH4 and Sony A7.

This Epic Shootout took a significant amount of work and resources, and there is also a lot of information I left out for the sake of time. I actually performed a series of Dynamic Range tests that will support much of what I listed, and I will add a link to my blog when it is all confirmed and organized. That test is more scientific and easily repeatable by anyone who owns these cameras.

The Opening Sequence was shot almost entirely with the Panasonic GH4, please support our sponsor BHPhoto.com who lent us some very expensive gear to get the 4K tests out of both cameras:

Production Notes:

- Sony A7s 4K video was recorded to the Aja Ki Pro Quad Recorder, we used the same recorder for the 10-Bit GH4 4K video and were unsuccessful recording 10-Bit through the HDMI port.

- GH4 was a joy to use. The internal 4K recording and $800 less-in-price are really what made it stand out. Whatever magic is happening inside that little camera is special. The A7s takes more time to learn to navigate.

This is a second quick video demonstrating one way to shoot 10-bit 4K on the Panasonic GH4. We usually record 8-Bit 4K directly to the card, but even the 8-Bit with HDMI out through the same line we use for the A7s struggles and drops frames. We literally tried everything we could think of, this is the only way that actually worked. I am suspicious it has something to do with the power supply out of the GH4, when the base is connected, and is powered through a separate supply, there are no issues.

We have more of these little tests coming and are listening to all your feedback.

This is a quick video demonstrating one way to shoot in 4K on the Sony A7s. This method is neither cheap nor easy, but it works consistently once it is set up correctly. One strange issue that will cause it to fail is when it is plugged into outlet that is shared by many other electronic devices. I have no idea why.

Here is the non-slog comparison at ISO 800: http://youtu.be/HUHVT9GZRa0

Many of you have been asking for the A7s SLOG profile footage, and I had some from the same shoot going against the GH4 at 10 bits. Again, I apologize for the WB differences, and I have some footage from the next night that are more dialed in. For those of you who do not know, SLOG is essentially a setting that helps preserve otherwise blown out highlights, one negative is that it only works at ISO 3200 or higher, and some noise is visible to me at 4K coming out of the camera, but it is still definitely still usable. The compression between output and Youtube forgives a lot of this noise and I am working on a way to demonstrate the actual noise coming right out of the camera There is no question in my mind that the A7s has much better dynamic range for both stills and video, but I still post the footage for viewers to come to their own conclusions. I also really appreciate your feedback and suggestions.

For this clip, this is the slog profile credit goes to a forum user named Kholi whose tests I was most impressed with: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?326049-A7S-PicPro-Settings

Ill have a blog post coming shortly that will describe the technical work around and set up for recording this footage off both cameras, and hopefully it will answer many of those questions. I had a limited amount of time that first night and was just happy to finally get that 4K footage off both cameras. I shot again the second night with an ISO ramp up test from 200 all the way through the range of both cameras.

Another sincere thank you to BHphoto.com for sponsoring this test, please support them when making your camera purchases, they have been amazing to work with.

---

I know there will be a lot of technical type questions about how this test was performed and more specifically about how the footage was recorded from the HDMIs on both cameras. Suffice it to say, it was not cheap, easy or fun, but I felt really determined to find a work around and was able to do so, by September, the way I did it will be obsolete as the Shogun Recorder should be available.

Important to note, there were a lot of technical problems, from the lenses, composition, camera set ups, lighting, camera settings, exposure, capturing, editing, exporting, but I just wanted to try to get a ball park idea of what was going on and give you guys the information to help you come to your own conclusions.

The footage is much better coming out of the cameras. There is some compression when I export, there is more when Youtube processes it, still it should give you guys an idea of what you can get out of each camera.

I already have a very detailed tutorial training video on the GH4 for those of you who want to learn all about it: http://www.canontrainingvideo.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=74

I've been shooting with the new Panasonic GH4 for a couple weeks now, and wow...what an amazing, ground-breaking, game changing camera for videographers. If you shoot a lot of video and haven't heard about it, you definitely need to take a look at what it can do:

- 4K in Camera Video
- Peak Focusing
- Variable Frame Rates
- Wi-Fi
- Flippy Touch Screen
- $1700

Additionally, the size and weight are significantly smaller than traditional DSLRs, especially when we consider the heavy lenses. I had never been interested in the GH line until I heard about the 4K and at that time I knew I needed to take a look. I am SO glad I did!

There are a number of really fantastic reviews already on Youtube that compare lots of video & features:

Luke Neumann's GH4 Comparison:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kwMWb2KPB4

Dave Dugdale's Comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxGekOHEPuc

Nearly all of the questions I have been getting have been about using the GH4 for stills photography, as just about everyone is agreeing the GH4 is simply amazing for video, so I decided to take a look to see how it matched up against a DSLR, in this case the Canon 5Diii. Yes, it is an apples or oranges comparison, but the 5D3 is a really good benchmark for an excellent all round camera.

Having spent some quality time with the GH4, I found a lot of strengths and weaknesses worth noting, and in these quick comparisons, I try to really focus on what matters most, and get to the point as quickly as possible. Consider it me doing your research and testing for you. There were a lot of little things that I liked, didn't like, but left them out for the sake of time.

A thought on the Dynamic Range Test: I made mention of the curves feature, which when used with jpgs and video could really squeeze a lot more detail out of shadows and highlights and give the GH4 a distinct advantage over the 5Diii for those file types. That said, because the shadowns/highlight feature doesn't apply to the raw images, this is a processor feature, and therefore, is something you can easily do in post with both camera files.

Some of the information I have in my video directly conflicts with what I have been seeing and reading in other reviews. It is possible that I had a bad copy, but due to the fact I was able to consistently reproduce the issues I was seeing, (sports focusing for example), I do feel obligated to tell you what I see before you all run out and buy one. It is a very, very good sports shooting camera for mirrorless system. It is not a DSLR slayer...yet, and I knew this after literally a couple minutes.

All that said, yes, I have purchased a GH4 and a couple lenses for it. No, I am not giving up my Canon gear at this time. I see the GH4 and the 5Diii that are different tools that do different things. I will say that the bigger camera companies have been put on notice, the Panasonic and the GH4 are a force to be reckoned with and if it continues, they will soon take over a huge chunk of the video shooting market. The GH4 should win multiple awards and I wouldn't be surprised if it won camera of the year.

I sure do appreciate your comments and thoughts, please let me know what you guys think!

Maven Adapter | What is the Maven Adapter? | World Launch
Get your Maven Adapter right at my store:http://www.canontrainingvideo.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6&products_id=72

Having used my own custom made version of the Maven Adapter for years, I wanted to make this most excellent adapter and tool available to photographers of all backgrounds. Typically, we shoot from eye level or lower, and there is a whole new world of camera angles and lighting opportunities when shooting from above.

The Maven Adapter will enable you to connect your already existing camera gear to the end of a hardware pole, allowing you to extend it 15 feet or higher. It will also allow you to connect Speedlites, an umbrella, go pro or other accessories.

If you are a Semi-Pro or Pro photographer, the Maven Adapter is a no brainer because it gives you a competitive advantage over all other photographers who do not have it. I used it for group and ceremony shots all the time as a wedding photographer.

Ive had a few smaller runs last year, they sell out quick, so get yours while supplies last!

Thank you guys for all your support!

Your Invitation to Join Michael's 2014 365 Club!
New 365 Website: http://www.365.mavenforums.com

Since 2008, Michael has sponsored a number of 365 Projects. Having seen the overwhelmingly positive benefit of a 365 Project for past students as well as himself, Michael is now extending this challenge to you! This is your opportunity to tap into your creative potential and become the very best photographer you can be!

A 365 consists of taking an image of yourself everyday for 1 year, and uploading those images to share with our 365 community. There is an emphasis on trying new techniques, styles, equipment, editing, etc, each day, to really explore your own look and style. There is plenty of flexibility for you to post when you want, catch up when you want, or even get ahead of schedule if you have the time.

We have created a new website to cater to 365'ers, and have also included a new "How To 365" PDF Ebook, both of which are FREE. In addition to some great prizes, there are a lot of personal, intangible skill sets you will acquire over the course of your 365 project.

Sign up for our "Class of 2014" is before Jan 31st, but anyone may sign up at later dates solo or with a group of their choosing.
